Blog #15 - Female Stereotypes

Different genres of films have a variety of stereotypes. Depending on the type, there are expectations for a movie. For example, when someone sees a blonde girl in a movie a typical stereotype is that she is dumb. Well, for drama/thriller genres they have a few stereotypes that people will expect to see. This blog will cover female stereotypes and counter-stereoptypes.

Female stereotypes for film in general-

Females are typically seen as rewards, a symbol, or for entertainment. They are made to be boy crazy, ditzy, she only cares about her looks, over-emotional, dramatic, powerless, the list goes on. Women are made out to be anything that is inferior to the male characters. They are just there to "look pretty". Movies that go along with these stereotypes are films like "Little mermaid" , "She's all That" and "Clueless". They make it seem as women are fragile and need a man to help them, or a women needs a "makeover" to be pretty, or even that women are stupid overall. However, there are movies that represent counter-stereotypes. These involving " 10 Things I Hate About You", "She's The Man", and "Legally Blonde" . These movie show that women are smart, they have opinions, and they can do everything a man can do and even do it better.

Female stereotypes in my film-

My film is a drama and a female oriented film. All of my actors are female beside the robbers. Stereotypes for my film will involve women being over-dramatic and a man broke her. My film is beating those allegations as she isn't being over-dramatic. She actually tried hiding her feelings for a while until she couldn't anymore. She doesn't like to talk about what she is going through. She also isn't upset over a man. Colia has bigger issues to worry about, she is preoccupied in trying to help herself that the whole film never mentions a man that broke up with her or emotionally hurt her or anything like that. A stereotype that my film does support, is that women are therapist. Therapy is 70% women, this going in the job stereotype that women are therapists.
